About Dr. Mitchell-Handley

A Midwesterner for most of her life, Dr. Handley and her family, like the birds, are excited about
their migration to the South from Chicago!
Growing up surrounded by women in her family, Dr. Handley’s passion for caring for women and
women’s health started prior to her educational training. While attending college at Valparaiso
University in Indiana, being a volunteer Doula cultivated her interest in Obstetrics and
Gynecology. After graduation from Valparaiso University, she went on to Cleveland Clinic Lerner
College of Medicine of Case Western University in Cleveland, OH where she received her
medical degree with special qualifications in biomedical research. Here she developed her
interest in quality improvement research with multiple projects involving maternal opioid abuse
and neonatal abstinence syndrome and passion for teaching and education. She was awarded
a Scholarship in Teaching award for her work in developing a feedback tool for medical student
communication skills education and the Alice Paige Cleveland Price, an award recognizing her
for outstanding leadership qualities.
Dr. Handley completed OB/GYN residency at the University of Chicago in the Hyde Park
neighborhood of Chicago, IL. It was here where she developed strong interests in caring for
women with high risk pregnancies and complex medical conditions from a variety of
backgrounds. She is passionate about patient education and improvement of healthcare quality.
Dr. Handley believes in the power of listening to her patients and in shared-decision making to
improve her patients’ quality of life and independence in making healthcare decisions.
Dr. Handley’s clinical interests include preventive health, uterine fibroids, abnormal uterine
bleeding, family planning, and perinatal depression and mental health disorders. She is excited
to care for women with both low and high-risk pregnancies.
Outside of work, Dr. Handley enjoys relaxing with her husband and daughter, trying new
restaurants, binge watching reality television shows and the Harry Potter marathons, and
traveling.
